Is It Time To Replace Your Mattress?

Getting a new mattress is a big decision. A great mattress is an investment, and it takes time to find the right mattress for you. But, as the Mattress Man sleep consultants will tell you, the investment is really in your long-term health. Your mattress greatly affects your sleep quality, and the quality and duration of your sleep can impact your energy, your weight, your body’s ability to recover, and even your heart health.

So, how do you know it’s time to replace your mattress? There are a few telltale signs your bed is due for an upgrade and a few life circumstances that might mean it’s time for a new mattress.

Your bed is breaking down.

The standard life of any mattress ranges from eight to twenty years, which is quite a broad timespan. You’ll generally be able to tell how long your mattress will last based on the warranty it comes with. Our HD Super Duty and Nature’s Spa mattress lines carry 20-year warranties, and A.H. Beard mattresses have a 15- to 20-year warranty. Features like natural latex and hand tufting make these mattresses extremely durable.

We generally recommend an upgrade around that time for a few reasons. First, the fibers, foam and springs in your mattress wear over time and use. If you feel lumps, grooves, or sleep indentations in your bed, it’s time for a new one. People often complain about the ridge in the center of a mattress that tends to emerge after years of sleeping in one spot. Again, that’s a sign that your mattress material is wearing down.

Another reason is that your bed collects dust and particles from the atmosphere, including sweat, dirt and skin. Your mattress also collects dust mites, which can cause allergic reactions in some people. No, it’s not pleasant to think about, but if anything, it should encourage you to buy a mattress protector with your new bed!

Your back is breaking down.

If you wake up with aches and pains that don’t persist throughout the day, it’s likely some of the soreness or stiffness is caused by your mattress. And aches might show up in places other than your back. If your neck, hips, or shoulders feel tight, numb or sore, you could be sleeping on a mattress that doesn’t give you enough support.

You’re moving.

While moving presents its own challenges, it can also be an opportunity for a mattress upgrade. If you’re moving to a place with a larger bedroom, consider promoting your mattress from a full to a queen or a queen to a king.

You’re gaining a bed partner.

If you’re moving in with a partner or adding a pet to the family, you might want to get a bigger bed. In the former situation, consider mattress shopping with your partner, so you can practice one of many exercises in compromise and find something that suits you both. Make sure you both feel supported and comfortable, and try out different beds together. If one of you is a light sleeper, try tossing and turning on a bed to get a feel for how much movement the mattress absorbs. Alternatively, you could get a split king, which is one bed made up of two different mattresses — no compromise needed. Well, at least not on which mattress you buy.

No matter the circumstance, we’re here to help you find the right mattress. Come visit one of our three Mattress Man locations and find your next bed.
