The sun is shining a little bit longer these days, new growth is brightening the neighborhood lawns and gardens, and hopefully the days are getting a bit warmer. Spring is here! And as nature refreshes itself, it’s a good time to give your house a freshening up of its own. Start with the room you spend the most time in — your bedroom.
Rotate your mattress
The onset of spring is a good time to rotate your mattress. These days, fewer mattresses are made to flip from one side to the other, but you can rotate the head of the mattresses to the foot of the bed once every six months. That way, you can distribute your body weight more evenly across the mattress without having to change your sleep position.
Wash your sheets
You should be washing your sheets every other week in hot water. This is a good time to thoroughly check them for holes, rips in the fabric, stains, or other major signs of wear and determine whether it’s time to buy a new set. This is also a good time to make sure your mattress cover gets washed.
Don’t forget your duvet
We know. Most of you don’t wash your duvet, blanket, comforter or fancy pillow covers every other week (we don’t either). But you should wash them every month, and definitely make sure they get a good cleaning when you’re in spring cleaning mode.
For down comforters and some delicate bedding, you’ll need to spot treat or have it dry cleaned. Always check the care tags on your bedding to be sure.
Clean your pillows
Your pillows need to be cleaned, too. Feather pillows and foam pillows are delicate and often need to be spot-treated. Again, be sure to check the care tags for any specific instructions before cleaning. With pillows that cannot be laundered in a washing machine, it’s even more important to use (and regularly clean) pillow covers.
If you have pillows that can handle the washing machine, it’s a good idea to wash two pillows at a time so you don’t end up with an uneven load error during the wash cycle, and it helps to run an extra rinse cycle so no soap gets left in the pillows.
Clean your mattress
First things first, make sure you are using a mattress protector to prevent your mattress from retaining moisture or getting stained.
To clean the mattress itself, strip your bed of sheets and the mattress protector, and use the upholstery attachment on your vacuum cleaner to vacuum the surface of your mattress. To deodorize, sprinkle baking soda on the surface of your mattress, wait 30 minutes to an hour, and then vacuum it up.
Spring clean your bedtime routine, too
Check in with your sleep routine. Are you getting enough sleep? This is a good time to reflect on ways you could create a more consistent bedtime routine, minimize the use of technology before bed, and create a space more conducive to sleep.
