Should I upgrade to a king size mattress? is a question we hear all the time. Very often, the answer is yes. What’s bad about more space to move, stretch out and lounge around? Nothing. But if you’re on a budget or not sure about your living situation, there are a few important questions you can ask yourself to make a good decision about getting a bigger bed. Here’s our list:
Is my bedroom big enough to accommodate a king size bed?
First of all, a king size mattress is wider and longer than a queen size mattress. See our handy post on mattress dimensions to get the exact measurements for king and California king mattresses.
Before you get your heart set on a king size bed, check your space. You don’t want your bed to take up the entire bedroom. Smaller rooms with low ceilings can appear overwhelmed by a big bed. So, break out your measuring tape and and mark off the lines of a king size mattress in your bedroom. See what it looks like and feels like. If the size works for you, then you’re over that hurdle.
Do I want more room on my mattress?
Do you feel cramped in your current situation? If you feel like you get pushed to the edge of the bed at night, or if you feel like you collide with your partner every time you turn over, a wider mattress might help you sleep more comfortably at night.
Will I move in the next few years?
Whether or not you currently have enough space for a king size bed doesn’t matter if you know you’ll move in the next few years. If a relocation is pending, are you willing to search for homes or apartments with a master bedroom that’s big enough for your bed?
Of course, it’s not easy to know what the future holds, but if you do have a five-year plan, take into account your most likely future living situation.
Will I add a bed partner soon?
It might be time to ask yourself about the future of your relationship. If you and your partner don’t live together already, will that person be moving in with you any time soon?
Also, think about who else will want to hop into your bed, even if it’s just for a few hours. Dogs and cats have a funny habit of hogging a ton of bed space. And if you have a young child who likes to jump into your bed on a Saturday morning, a little more room might be nice.
