5 Reasons You Shouldn’t Go Without a Mattress Protector

A mattress protector is an inexpensive way to extend the value of a relatively expensive investment. It’s one of those no-brainer purchases you should make when you buy a new mattress. But a lot of people don’t. Why not? They probably think the worst case scenario (a child or pet wetting the bed) won’t happen to them. Maybe they don’t have kids or pets and don’t eat in bed. Okay, but there are other ways a mattress protector has your back. Here are our top five reasons you should never, ever go without a protective mattress cover:

1. That beautiful shot of breakfast in bed is a far cry from reality.

It looks like a lovely morning: Sun streaming through the window at just the right angle. Crisp, white sheets and fluffy white pillows. A tray stacked with hot, black coffee, orange juice (freshly squeezed, let’s assume), eggs and a flaky croissant. This type of image gets a lot of likes on Instagram.

But have you ever actually tried to eat breakfast in bed? It’s a messy proposition. And those trays, balanced unevenly on top of your pillows, are precarious. Eating or drinking anything in bed inevitably leads to spilling something in bed. And your sheets are not going to protect your mattress. You need a mattress protector for that.

2. If you have young children, accidents don’t just happen in their beds.

This is just the way it works with kids. Even if you think you’ve gotten through all of the important stages of potty training, that your child hasn’t had an accident in months, it will happen when he or she is taking a snooze in your bed. And getting urine out of mattress is no joke. It’s much, much easier to deal with if you can throw your sheets and your mattress protector in the washing machine.

3. Random events, that you could never predict, will happen in your bed.

This probably sounds more exciting than it is. But we’ve seen the damage done by a pen exploding while someone worked in bed. The ink ruined a set of sheets, soaked through to the mattress, left a giant blue stain, and voided the mattress’ warranty.

4. A mattress cover ensures your warranty.

Most mattress warranties are void if there is obvious damage to the mattress, including visible stains. An easy way to prevent this and protect not only your mattress, but your warranty too, is to use a mattress cover. Like we said earlier, this is a pretty small price to pay to extend the life of your mattress.

5. A sweaty night’s sleep can be washed out of a mattress cover.

If you sleep hot, or tend to wake up warm and sweaty at night, you definitely need a mattress protector. We all lose roughly one-liter of perspiration each night. That sweat is seeping through your sheets into your mattress. And moisture isn’t good for foam and other mattress materials.

If this list hasn’t convinced you, take a look at some of the technological advancements in the mattress protectors themselves.
